Second Residency and Alternative Citizenship
Your Path to Second Residency & Alternative Citizenship
In a world that is becoming increasingly interconnected and volatile, many Americans and citizens of other countries are exploring opportunities to obtain a second residency or passport.
Whether for lifestyle flexibility, tax optimization, or global mobility, these options provide significant benefits. Europe and the Caribbean offer some of the most popular options for second residency and citizenship, although the options do not end there.

Why Pursue a Second Residency or Passport?
Enhanced Mobility: Visa-free travel to more destinations.
Global Lifestyle: The ability to live, work, or retire abroad with ease.
Business Opportunities: Broader access to international markets and economies.
Golden Visas: Residency Through Investment
Golden Visa programs allow individuals to secure residency by investing in real estate, businesses, or government-approved funds with minimal residency requirements.
These programs are so-called “golden” because you can qualify for residency (and, ultimately, citizenship) while actually spending very little (or no) time in the country.
The popular Golden Visa program in Spain is slated to terminate on April 3, 2025, but there still exists several appealing options with Portugal remaining the most popular and accessible program in Europe.

Portugal Golden Visa
Minimum Investment: €500,000 in an approved venture fund, which there are dozens to choose from. AmLaw Group can assist in selecting the fund with an appropriate risk profile for you. There are other investment options available in Portugal, including the investment of only €250,000 in a project of cultural heritage, but from our experience those are difficult to find in practice.
Benefits: Access to Portugal’s healthcare, education, and visa-free travel within the European Union. Citizenship eligibility after five years of residency.
Greece Golden Visa
Minimum Investment: as little as €250,000 when investing in existing real estate that is being refurbished.
Benefits: Fast-track residency with no physical presence required. Visa-free travel within the European Union. Citizenship is possible after seven years. However, acquiring citizenship under the Greek program is a bit more difficult than in Portugal or Malta.
Malta Permanent Residence Program (MPRP)
Investment Requirements: As little as €100,000 to acquire initial residency when investing in approved funds. Real estate investment options are also available. Citizenship is available after residency of 12 or 36 months.
Benefits: No minimum physical presence requirement. Visa-free travel within the EU. Relatively fast issuance of residency, and potential citizenship after a longer residency period.
Caribbean Citizenship by Investment (CBI)
The Caribbean offers some of the fastest and most affordable paths to acquiring a second citizenship for those seeking a second passport for business, mobility, or simply a viable “Plan B.” There are no physical presence requirements, and the processing times are quite reasonable.
Some of the Popular CBI Caribbean Programs:
St. Kitts & Nevis: Citizenship starting at $250,000 through donations to the Sustainable Growth Fund or real estate investment starting from $325,000.
Dominica: Citizenship for $200,000 through a donation or investment in real estate.
Antigua & Barbuda: Citizenship with a $230,000 donation or purchase of real estate from $300,000.
Key Benefits
Visa-free travel to over 140+ countries depending on the exact country.
Low or zero taxes on income, wealth, or inheritance.
Fast application processes, often completed within 3–6 months.

Choosing the Right Path
The best program for you depends on your personal goals, financial situation, and lifestyle preferences. For remote workers, nomad visas offer flexibility, while Golden Visas and Caribbean CBI programs are better suited for individuals seeking long-term solutions for residency and citizenship.
