Chinese, Indian immigrant numbers catching up to Mexican

This past May, the U.S. Census Bureau released a report indicating that the number of immigrants from China and India has seen a massive increase, while the number of individuals immigrating from Mexico has stalled.

Mexicans still make up the largest immigrant group in America, comprising over a quarter of the foreign-born population. However, out of the 1.2 million newly arrived immigrants counted in 2013, both legal and illegal, 147,000 of them were Chinese and 129,000  were Indian, while only 125,000 were Mexican. This represents a sharp contrast when compared to the numbers from 2000, which counted 402,000 new immigrants from Mexico and less than 84,000 from China and India.

Experts attribute these recent numbers to the fact that illegal immigration is on the decline. With the growth of Chinese and Indian economies, individuals and families from these countries are gaining the ability to travel and pay for higher educations abroad. Unless revisions are made to existing immigration policy, though, any large changes in immigrant populations will be slow.
